Future of Management

A great book from the management Guru Gary Hamel.

FutureManagement

You can view a video of Hamel speaking about this book Here!

Hamel, a well-known business thinker and author (Leading the Revolution), advocates that dogma be rooted out and a new future be imagined and invented. To aid managers and leaders on this mission, Hamel offers case studies and measured analysis of management innovators like Google and W.L. Gore (makers of Gore-Tex), then lists lessons that can be drawn from them. He doesn’t gloss over how difficult it will be to reinvent management, comparing the new and needed shift in thinking to Darwin’s abandoning creationist traditions and physicists who had to look beyond Newton’s clockwork laws to discover quantum mechanics. The book serves primarily as an invitation to shed age-old systems and processes and think differently. The content will likely appeal to managers accustomed to b-school textbooks and tired of gimmicky business evangelism.

You can purchase Hamel’s book at the SMC bookstore Here!

As some of you may know, our very own Professor Llyod Williams is also a professor at Global 21. If you do not know Global 21 it is an online graduate school backed by an international network of research intensive universities including: Lund, Korea, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Melbourne, Queensland, Singapore, NUS, Fudan, Virginia, Delhi, Hong Kong amongst others.

Professor Williams was recently honoured by being presented an award for Outstanding Professor along with an award for Excellence in Online Teaching for 2008.

You can read the announcement on the Global 21 website here.

On behalf of all the students at SMC we would like to congratulate Professor Williams on a job well done and on his committment to his students and advancing the professionalism of online studies. We wish him even more success in the future.

SSRN

Fellow Students:

The SSRN has over 175,000 articles in the social sciences. That means business articles too.  Also, 90% of them are free. So next time you are doing research have a look at their site. You are sure to find articles on your topic. All very recent as well.

You can find their site at www.SSRN.com

From Their Website:

Social Science Research Network (SSRN) is devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences. We have received several awards for our web site. Each of SSRN’s networks encourages the early distribution of research results by publishing abstracts and by soliciting abstracts of top quality research papers around the world. We now have hundreds of journals, publishers, and institutions that provide working papers for distribution through eLibrary and abstracts for publication in SSRN’s electronic journals. The SSRN eLibrary consists of two parts: an Abstract Database containing abstracts on over 179,400 scholarly working papers and forthcoming papers and an Electronic Paper Collection currently containing over 143,400 downloadable full text documents in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. The eLibrary also includes the research papers of a number of fee based Publishing.

Video eMail

Send your Professor a video email !

For many of us it is difficult to make that connection to our professors and fellow students. Often video technologies are plagued by incompatibility problems or are just plain clunky! The alternative, video eMail was difficult because file sizes were too large to send via email and most would be bumped.

Quicktime Logo

With Apple’s release of the latest verison of Quicktime many of these issues of sending video email are gone and you are able to, at last, send a personalized version of yourself to someone half way around the world no matter what platform you use, Mac or PC.

  http://www.apple.com/ca/quicktime/download/

Quicktime now supports the H.264 format for recording video that makes it possible to send small sized video through email. The video in the email takes the size of an iPod screen thus requiring less memory.

What You Need:

You will require two things to make video eMail a reality. First you will need a camera for your computer. Many variations of cameras are available at all different price points. We figure you can purchase a reliable camera for something around $50 U.S., but there are cheaper ones out there. Second, you will need a copy of the Quicktime program. The regular program is free, however if you wish to record you will need the Pro version which cost $29.99 U.S. Interestingly, the pereson at the other end only needs the free version to view your video eMail. So you can send that important video eMail to Mom and not have her spend any money!

What You Do:

Once your camera is installed in your machine, or if you are one of the lucky ones you have a camera pre-installed, you then start Quicktime and simply record your video. Once recorded you attach the video to your outgoing eMail as you would any other file.

Memory:

Typically you get 1.20 minutes of video play per Megabyte so you want to keep the video to less than 5 minutes or less than 5 mb to insure you dont get bumped by a server. Most email services like Google and Hotmail/MSN now allow up to 10 MB email messages. This is still quite a lot of time to express yourself verbally. Naturally you can also accompany the video eMail with standard written word or attach other files.

For SMC:

The video eMail makes a perfect way for many students to send a greeting to new professors so that professors can put a face and personality to their distance learning students. So give it a try and see your relationship with your professor take on a greater depth. Also, some of the professors once introduced to the technology by the student council have committed to using it to help further develop our learning platform.

Have Fun, The Student Council.

Happy New Year

Dear Fellow Students, Professors and Administrators,

Of first priority we wish to thank the SMC administration and its directors for all the great help, diligence and focus that they have shown to the students, the programs and the student council through 2007. The course of study at SMC is only made better through their continued support and dedication and we all remain very grateful for this.

Secondly, and as important, a great thanks go out to all the professors who have given their time and energy to all the students in all the programs. It goes without saying that without the dedication of the professors none of this would be possible, so a great wish of thanks to each and everyone for their special knowledge and love of teaching.

For those mentioned above and to all our fellow students please accept the student council’s wishes on a happy and healthy New Year. We hope that it brings everyone the best of success personally, professionally and of course academically. The student council is confident that along with the SMC administration and our professors 2008 will bring interesting opportunities for growth and continued success building on the fantastic progress in 2007 which saw new professors, many new students, new graduates, the new student council blog site, new student council members, and ACBSP accreditation just to name a few.

For students 2008 will mean more work, more assignments, more papers and more studying. But, it will also mean new study partners, new professors, new challenges and new knowledge. Keep up the commitment and strong work ethic and 2008 is sure to be another stellar year for the SMC as we all make it happen.

Best of Wishes,

The Student Council
