Earth Hour Logo

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm on the 29 March, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.

You can sign up here as an individual to show your support: http://www.earthhour.org/sign-up

The SMC Student Council has created a simple template to help students in producing their research proposals.

Research Proposal Template

The template is in pdf format and you will need a reader to open the file.

The template acts as a guide and provides helpful information about how to structure the content of a research proposal. A link is also included to the Dissertation Module Handbook published by Swiss Management Center which provides details about the writing the Dissertation.

We suggest that students try out this template when working on the Research Methodology & Design module.

Any comments about the template, feel free to contact Julie Beardsell:

It’s that time of year again for you to consider your nominations for Professor of the Year award. Last year (2006) saw Professor Gueorguiev take the award with Professors Rangwala and Esposito tied for 2nd place.

The award is meant to recognize that teacher who stands out above and beyond his or her colleagues with respects to the performance of their role in interacting with their students for the academic year January 1 through December 31.

With that said, the award does not try to evaluate Professors. What it does is recognize a professor for their ability to touch and motivate students to perform at the highest level. Naturally, this can take on many forms. We have all had exceptional teachers in the past and know that the contribution that those special individuals make to our well being and future are unique and even though dearly appreciated, often go without praise and thanks.

The Student Council “Professor of the Year” award is an effort at showing the necessary appreciation and thanks to those very teachers that make us better students and persons. In its second year the Professor of the Year award is on its way to becoming a tradition at SMC.

Nature of Your Submission

If you’ve had an exceptional experience with a professor during the calendar year and you’d like to put their name forward as a potential recipient then we ask you to write a short 200 word or less narrative on why you believe your professor merits the award.

The student council believes that this award should be based on exceptional quality and as such the winner will be determined both by the number of votes as well as the compelling nature of the supporting reasons/narrative from the student making the submission. This is important as we wish to record not just the popularity of a Professor but the essence of what makes them exceptional. The award is 100% decided and dedicated by the student council, on behalf of the entire student body, and as such holds much value for the recipient.

How to Submit

Send your email submissions to student.council@students.swissmc.ch. Please include on the submission your name, the Professor’s name, the course name and your narrative explaining why they are being nominated by you. Please think carefully about your nomination as each student is only allowed to nominate one professor for the award.

Timing

Submissions may be made up to February 15th. After that students will not be able to submit, the Professor of the Year will be announced shorlty after closing.

The Student Council looks forward to reading many of your examples of how the professors at the SMC have helped to motivate you, elucidate the lessons and generally help you to become a better person. Please join us in making this award the best it can be by nominating your professor.

ACBSP Accreditation

ACBSP Logo Large

It is a pleasure for the SMC Student Council along with the SMC administration to bring to the attention of the student body the successful accreditation of the SMC by the ACBSP.

You can read up on the ACBSP here: http://www.acbsp.org

ACBSP is the leading specialized accreditation association for business education supporting, celebrating, and rewarding teaching excellence. The association embraces the virtues of teaching excellence and emphasizes to students that it is essential to learn how to learn. ACBSP acknowledges the importance of scholarly research and inquiry and believes that such activities facilitate improved teaching. Institutions are strongly encouraged to pursue a reasonable mutually beneficial balance between teaching and research. And further, ACBSP encourages faculty involvement within the contemporary business world to enhance the quality of classroom instruction and to contribute to student learning. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, CHEA.

The student council was a participant in the accreditation process along with the administration in order to help illustrate the fullness of the SMC program as it relates to the student body. It was a pleasure for the student council to be a part of this important achievement in the unfolding history of our institution. The student council is confident that the new year will bring continuous improvements to the student experience at the SMC both on the part of the administration and the student council working individually and in consort.

Congratulations to every person involved in making the accreditation a reality and thank you for the great effort and amount of hard work that went into the effort.

SMC Student Council would like to bring to the attention of Doctoral Students the call for papers and participation in the EURAM 2008 Doctoral Colloquim.

Celebrating SMC Students & Alumni Everywhere!

It is a pleasure for the SMC Student Council to announce the formation of the SMC Working Paper Series. You may find the first article in the series entitled: “The global outsourcing medley of the 21st century”, by the Student Council’s very own Julie Beardsell at:

http://www.swissmc.ch/research_library_publications/smc_working_papers_series

The working paper series is a free resource available to our student community and to other Universities and Institutions worldwide, where the high level of our intellectual contributions produced within our educational programs, can be made available for the communities at large. We encourage you to read the papers, use it in your research and study endeavors and feel free to contact the authors directly, for further discussion.

SMC is proud to support the student community in putting its best foot forward in demonstrating its underlying talent and skill. The Student Council supports the Working Paper Series initiative as a way to further this goal and celebrate individual student efforts.

All students are encouraged to participate in the initiatives with research and focus papers on their areas of specialty. Please contact Professor Esposito or send an email to research@swissmc.ch  if you are interested in proposing a working paper.

Again, congratulation to Julie for being the first contributor with her paper.

The Student Council now has new email addresses to facilitate the communication between students, the council and the SMC. You can find the new addresses by clicking here:

Mentors needed

It’s almost a year since the SMC Student Council launched the mentoring program. How time flies by! So far the mentoring program has been very successful and we would like to thank those of you who have become active mentors!

The number of students at SMC is growing significantly and with this, the demand for mentors is also growing. Mentors play a very special and valuable role in helping students find their way and stay motivated during their study program.

Would you like to volunteer to be a mentor? It’s very worthwhile and you make a unique connection with other students.

Mentors can come from any level of studies at the SMC. Each mentor/mentee relationship will be different and as long as both individuals come to it with an open mind and a sense of assistance then it will no doubt be a success.

Ideal mentors are those that have experience in positions of responsibility, are mature in their outlook, are respectful and feel that they have something to give. Moreover, it would be best if mentors have already completed a few modules at SMC. However, extraordinary experience outside of SMC may make you a perfect mentor for more junior students.

If you’d like to be a mentor, please contact the Student Council at:
student.council@student.swissmc.ch

Dissertations & Theses

As mentioned on the SMC discussion board, we have created two pages that will describe the various dissertations and thesis work of both Doctoral and Master students.

If your thesis or dissertation is approved by the SMC administration and you would like to list it on these pages then send in your name, the title of the study and a short description (less than 50 words) to student.council@student.swissmc.ch and we will have it posted.

Many students have expressed interest in knowing what their fellow students are studying in order to hook up with one another for knowledge purposes. The first step in this process is to let others know what you are studying.

The student council hopes that this information will be interesting and usefull.
