Future of Management

A great book from the management Guru Gary Hamel.

FutureManagement

You can view a video of Hamel speaking about this book Here!

Hamel, a well-known business thinker and author (Leading the Revolution), advocates that dogma be rooted out and a new future be imagined and invented. To aid managers and leaders on this mission, Hamel offers case studies and measured analysis of management innovators like Google and W.L. Gore (makers of Gore-Tex), then lists lessons that can be drawn from them. He doesn’t gloss over how difficult it will be to reinvent management, comparing the new and needed shift in thinking to Darwin’s abandoning creationist traditions and physicists who had to look beyond Newton’s clockwork laws to discover quantum mechanics. The book serves primarily as an invitation to shed age-old systems and processes and think differently. The content will likely appeal to managers accustomed to b-school textbooks and tired of gimmicky business evangelism.

You can purchase Hamel’s book at the SMC bookstore Here!

Healing Organizational Dysfunction

 Congruence

As some of you know, our very own Professor Williams is an expert on organizational behavior with a Ph.D. in the subject. He also holds a Doctorate in Divinity. His book on healing dysfunction and creating effective change can be found in the SMC Student Council Bookstire by clicking HERE

Professor Williams

Dr. Williams of the SMC

This book explains in theoretical and practical terms the creation of effective change within organizations. The book states that dysfunction is a current fact of life, creating chronic problems for people and organizational systems. Dr. Williams describes the basis for dysfunction and develops an effective belief system that can guide personal and organizational functioning.

Specifically, Professor Williams defines the parameters of creating effective balance and, through three primary cases shows how dysfunction can guide personal and organizational action. He displays an abiding belief that change should occur only when people and systems begin to experience dysfunction. He describes a process for change and effectively walks the manager, professional, consultant, student, or faculty person through creating balance, change, and congruence for the long term.

Peter Drucker is the one who coined the phrase “knowledge worker” and went on to write many influential books and papers on management theory. This book studies GM from the inside out.
